iPhone 4 - This changes everything. Again.

Today Steve Jobs presented the newest iPhone at the Worldwide Developer Conference.

We’re talking about the iPhone 4, a phone which is almost a quarter thinner than its predecessor, measuring only  9.3 mm. The new iPhone is equiped with a camera in front as well as in the back, a flash and some cosmetic changes.

The metal strip around the side isn’t just an aesthetic element, but also serves as antenna, which gives for a better reception of both GPS and 3G.

Jobs spent a lot of time talking about the technical specs, such as the new 3.5”, 960x640 display which he aptly names the “Retina Display”. With 326 px/inch the pixels are so small they aren’t visible to the human eye it should produce an astoundingly clear and sharp image.

However, the demo, where Jobs tried to launch the New York Times site on both a new and an old iPhone went wrong due to connection errors.

Hardware

Under the bonnet we can find the same chip which is also found in the iPad. The iPhone uses the same “micro-sim”, a skimmed down version of the regular sim-card. In Belgium several operators such as Mobile Vikings have announced that they will distribute these mircro-sims.

The iPhone also comes with a gyroscope which allows the device to detect movement in every direction. This will be mostly useful for motion gaming. Apple, which is getting more involved in to gaming, also recently announced to have plans for a game network.

The new iPhone will have a 5 megapixel camera which will be able to shoot HD (720p, 30 fps) video. This is an attempt to gain some ground where other companies such as LG, Nokia and Samsung are still ahead of them with 1080p HD.

Furthermore, the new iPhone is built with the same A4-cpu which is also found in the iPad. This has a Cortex A8-core (1GHz). The graphic card is a PowerVR SGX540-gpu.

Software

Jobs also talked about the software featured on the iPhone. It was already announced that the operating system would be renewed, but the name changed from iPhoneOS 4 to iOS4. This indicates that it won’t only be used on phones.
